The great surviving clubrooms
A handful of proper institutions still hold the line. Perth has Connections Nightclub in Northbridge — open since 1975, the Southern Hemisphere's longest-running gay club, and a genuine pilgrimage. Brisbane has

Poof Doof (opens in a new tab) at Chasers. Adelaide's Mary's Poppin doubles as the city's queer dance venue. These are the reliable big-room nights in their cities.
The ones we've lost
Be prepared for gaps, because the last few years have been brutal on gay clubs. Canberra's Cube — the capital's clubbing cornerstone for two decades — closed end of 2025. Darwin's Throb, the Top End's only gay club, shut in 2023. Adelaide's historic Mars Bar closed years back. It's part of a documented national trend: dating apps, rising rents and redevelopment, cost-of-living, and mainstream acceptance drawing queer people into 'straight' venues have all thinned the herd. If you're in a mid-size city, don't assume a dedicated gay club still exists — check first.
When the club is gone, find the party
Here's the shift that matters: the energy that used to live in permanent clubs has largely migrated to touring and roving party brands. Poof Doof (opens in a new tab) runs across Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Cities and towns without a fixed venue increasingly get their big nights from promoters who take over a mainstream club for the evening — Brisbane's Fluffy and Precious, Wollongong's Club GAYDAY, countless others. So the modern way to find a gay club night near you is to hunt the party, not the building: follow local queer promoters and your nearest Pride organisation on Instagram, and check Humanitix and Eventbrite for one-off dance events.
Time it to a Pride
The single most reliable move if your area is venue-light: plan around a Pride festival. Perth's PrideFEST and Adelaide's Feast (both November), Darwin Pride (August), Cairns Tropical Pride (October), and every capital's season deliver dance parties and club takeovers even in places that have none the rest of the year. When the permanent dancefloor is gone, the festival calendar is where the big nights live.

You asked, so here it is, written like an adult: the bathhouses, where they are, and how not to be the awkward first-timer.
Gay saunas are a normal, unremarkable part of the nightlife map here, so let's cover them without the coy euphemisms. Sydney has a handful of genuine bathhouses, mostly clustered in and around Darlinghurst.
Sydney Sauna (opens in a new tab) (Oxford St, Darlinghurst) is the big, central, premium option — two levels, private rooms, dry sauna, steam, a large jacuzzi, cinema and café bar, open very late (24 hours on weekends). 357 is a long-running institution currently mid-move: its old Sussex Street home is being redeveloped, and the operators have opened a new Darlinghurst flagship, Sauna X by 357, in the former Bodyline building on Taylor Street — wet areas, private cabins, bar, café, even on-site sexual-health testing. Out in Western Sydney, Aarows (Rydalmere) runs 24/7 with a mixed crowd and men-only Sundays.
A couple of historical corrections, because old guides lie: the famous Ken's at Kensington closed back in 2012, and Bodyline is gone (its building is now Sauna X). Don't turn up to either.
First-timer etiquette
It's simpler than the nerves suggest. You pay at the door (entry usually includes a towel and locker), and staff will walk a first-timer through it if you say so. Wear the towel. Keep your phone in the locker — photography is a hard no, for everyone's privacy. 'No means no,' and a polite lack of eye contact is the universal 'not interested.' Play safe: condoms and lube are free and everywhere. Quiet times are weekday afternoons; weekend nights are busiest. And there's no obligation to do anything — plenty of people just use the sauna and steam and leave. Relax. Everyone was new once.

A scene queen tells you the truth: nightlife moves fast. Here's what was true as this guide went to bed, and what to double-check.
This guide is written to be evergreen — built around venues, neighbourhoods and recurring nights that hold true across a year, not one-off dated listings. But queer nightlife churns, and a few things below are worth a same-week check before you build a night around them.
Recently closed (don't turn up): the historic Stonewall on Oxford Street (into administration, 2026); The Bearded Tit, Redfern (closed late 2025); Ken's at Kensington sauna (closed 2012); Bodyline sauna (now Sauna X by 357).
Changed / worth confirming: ARQ (opens in a new tab) went through a closure and an 'Aura' rebrand before returning as ARQ in 2026 — open again, but a venue that's proven it can surprise you. 
Stonewall Newtown (opens in a new tab) is the brand's new King Street home. 357 / Sauna X is mid-relocation between Sussex Street and Taylor Street.
The golden rule: the night increasingly matters more than the venue — roaming and touring party brands (Poof Doof (opens in a new tab), Honcho Disko, Unicorns, Dykotomy, Lady Muck, Fluffy, Precious, Club GAYDAY) move by design, dedicated venues keep thinning, and festival dates shift every year. A venue's own Instagram is the truest source of what's on tonight. Use this guide for the map and the verdicts; use their socials for the where-and-when. Where to stay
Stay where the scene is and you'll thank yourself at 2am. Darlinghurst puts you steps from Oxford Street. Surry Hills is trendier and more residential but still an easy walk to the strip (and to the 
Beresford (opens in a new tab)). Potts Point / Elizabeth Bay sits just north — a bit calmer, good hotels, a short stroll to the action. For the alternative scene, base yourself in Newtown. Boutique names that have long been popular with gay travellers include the Kirketon and Medusa in Darlinghurst; misterb&b is widely used for gay-hosted stays. Sydney is broadly gay-welcoming across mainstream hotels these days, so you're not restricted to 'gay' properties.
When to come
The single biggest timing fact: Australia's Pride peak is February–March (Mardi Gras (opens in a new tab)), not June. Come in that window for the scene at full blast — but book flights and accommodation months ahead, because prices spike and rooms vanish. Want the scene without the crush and the surge pricing? Autumn (March–May) or spring (September–November) are lovely, and September also catches Sydney Fringe and a Queer Screen film festival.
Is it safe and welcoming?
Yes — genuinely. Sydney consistently ranks among the world's most queer-friendly cities, with marriage equality since 2017 and solid legal protections. Public affection in the gay neighbourhoods is completely unremarkable. Apply the same night-out common sense you would in any big city, and you'll be fine.
Getting around
The Darlinghurst/Oxford Street strip is compact and walkable end to end. Newtown and Erskineville are 10–20 minutes from the CBD by train, and Sydney runs late-night weekend train services on key lines. Grab an Opal card (or tap a contactless card) for trains, buses, light rail and ferries, and rideshare is everywhere for the trip home. Plan four to five days minimum if you want to do both villages justice.
