The Capitol Theatre
Sitting right on the city's main spine, this historic picture palace and auditorium comes into its own whenever a festival takes over the grid. It is proper theatrical grandeur upstairs, but the programming tilts heavily towards the screen, live performance, and festival seasons that draw the arts crowd right into the centre. When the Melbourne Queer Film Festival or RISING roll through, the room flips into full party mode. You will find everything from house and anthems closing parties to deep-dive celebrations of queer music videos, pulling together an audience that treats the cinema seats purely as a jumping-off point…
