The Red Rattler
The Red Rattler is a queer-run creative playground, established in 2009 by five local queer artists. It operates as an ethical, sustainable, and community-owned not-for-profit, volunteer-driven venue in Marrickville, Sydney. The Red Rattler provides inclusive and affordable access for a diverse range of communities and creators, aiming to foster solidarity and promote arts, activism, and queer culture. The venue was founded with the intention of creating a legal warehouse space in Sydney to showcase alternative arts, performance, and grassroots activism. It was developed to avoid the issues faced by many unregistered inner-city and inner-west warehouse spaces, ensuring a stable environment free from the pressures of high rents and developers. Fitted with a full PA system, stage, LED lighting rig, projector, screen, and a licensed bar, The Red Rattler also features a rooftop garden, subsidised arts office, and artist-in-residency studio. It serves as a hub for performers, musicians, artists, designers, multi-media makers, experimentalists, filmmakers, theorists, activists, collective organisers, and local punters.
