When ten-year-old John's beloved Uncle Max disappears at sea, John knows he's not truly missing. Max, a born traveller, has sailed beyond the mythical Lighthouse, from which there is no return, in search of the shapeshifting dolphin-woman he loves. John's family dismisses his theory, but his conviction strengthens over time. His only memento from Max is a book of maritime legends annotated with scribbled creatures and maps that don't make sense to others. John holds his secret close for many years, the pages of Max's book oft-thumbed. He eventually decides to buy a boat and follow the maps, determined to uncover the truth, whatever it reveals about the nature of reality. This production is a stripped-back performance focusing purely on storytelling. Props are minimal, including an upright wooden structure serving as a ship's mast, a lantern, a hagstone, and Max's annotated book of maritime myths. The narrative masterfully incorporates folkloric references to selkies and kelpies. Written and performed by Tom Robins of the Curious Roach Collective, the show features striking lines and philosophies. Notably, it explores how 'reality is not fixed: it grows with understanding'. This evocative and engaging performance offers a refreshing alternative to typical Fringe offerings. Please note: contains one minute of strobe lighting, occasional coarse language, mentions of violence, mental health themes, and loud noises. Age rating is 12 and up.
