SQS Sundays – Cockatoo Island
Date: Sunday 9 August 2026
Start: 10:00:00
Venue: Cockatoo Island, Cockatoo Island
Price: $9
Join us for an expedition to Cockatoo Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a rich history as a convict prison and dockyard. We will explore the island, including its five distinct precincts: Industrial, Docks, Historic Residence, Ship Design, and Convict Precincts. There are self-guided audio tours available for $10 if you wish to delve deeper into its past. The walk around the entire island is expected to take up to two hours, and includes stops for photos and reading information panels. While generally an easy walk, please be aware there are steps and some uneven surfaces. Highlights include the fascinating Convict Precinct, two historical tunnels (including the 200-metre Dog Leg Tunnel), and the Cliff Top Walk, offering spectacular views of the harbour and city skyline. We will meet at Circular Quay around 9:45 am, with the ferry departing promptly at 10:07 am (remember to tap on). Cockatoo Island is a ten-minute ferry ride away. Lunch options are available at the island's two licensed waterfront cafés, Marina Cafe & Bar and Cockatoo Overboard. Return ferries run frequently, every 20 minutes. Please RSVP so we know who to expect for this unique Sydney adventure. This event offers a chance to explore one of Sydney's most intriguing historical sites with a queer social group.
