This 1980 documentary is a contemporary time capsule of the very first Sydney Mardi Gras, which helped propel the fight for gay rights in Australia into the mainstream. It offers personal access to those involved, now known as the 78ers. The film documents the police brutality and 53 arrests faced on the night of 24 June 1978, and the subsequent political action. Digitally restored by the National Film and Sound Archive, it serves as a vital reminder of the LGBTIQ+ community's struggles and the ongoing importance of advocating for rights. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with filmmaker Digby Duncan and 78er Robyn Plaister. The documentary was directed by the One in Seven Collective (Digby Duncan, Miriam Moore, Melanie Rodriga, Leigh Simms), produced by Digby Duncan, and runs for 45 minutes. Tickets can be purchased online. Please note that a ticket fee of $0.50 and a booking fee of 2.5% apply for credit card sales. No refunds are available. The venue, The Substation, is only accessible via a narrow flight of stairs.
