Melbourne Gay Mens 40+ Support Group
Welcome to the Melbourne 40+ gay men support group. Steven Cabral, a trained group facilitator and counsellor, observed a gap in community service for mature-aged gay men, leading to the creation of this support group. While most services cater to younger generations, there is a particular experience in midlife and beyond that requires acknowledgement and support. As individuals transition into a different phase of life, new challenges arise. Some of these are tied to sexuality and how it can influence self-actualisation later in life. Participants may be carrying trauma from times when they were less accepted, impacting self-worth, or feeling isolated for not following conventional societal paths such as having children and partners. Others might be navigating dating in middle age or grappling with bigger questions of meaning and purpose. This group offers a sense of belonging and shared experience, which can be healing. It is not a substitute for therapy but provides a safe space for connection and inspiration. The group is specifically for gay men aged 40 and over, due to the nature of topics discussed. To maintain an intimate setting, attendance is limited to a maximum of 10 participants. The venue, NECCHi East Coburg Neighbourhood House, is wheelchair accessible.
